Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Climate change has become one of the most pressing global challenges, affecting agricultural practices, food security, and the livelihoods of farmers, particularly in rural areas. In Nigeria, farmers in the northeastern region, such as those in Gashua Local Government Area of Yobe State, are highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, including erratic rainfall, prolonged droughts, and soil degradation. Traditional methods of farming are increasingly becoming unsustainable due to these changes in climate patterns. As a result, there is a growing need for awareness and education on climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies. Films, as a popular and accessible medium, have the potential to play a crucial role in raising awareness and fostering behavioral change among farmers. In Gashua, local filmmakers have started using film as a tool to educate farmers about climate change, its impacts on agriculture, and the importance of sustainable farming practices. This study explores the role of film in promoting climate change awareness among farmers in Gashua, examining the content, reception, and effectiveness of such films in influencing farmers’ knowledge and practices.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the increasing awareness of climate change at the global level, many farmers in rural communities such as Gashua still lack sufficient knowledge and understanding of climate change and its potential impacts on agriculture. While several initiatives have sought to address this gap, including government programs and non-governmental organization (NGO) interventions, the role of film as an educational tool remains underexplored. Local films can serve as a powerful medium for educating farmers, as they offer both entertainment and valuable information that can resonate with local cultures and practices. However, the specific impact of climate change-related films on farmers’ awareness and behavioral changes in Gashua is not well documented. This study seeks to fill this gap by assessing the effectiveness of films in conveying climate change messages to farmers and their ability to promote sustainable agricultural practices in the face of climate challenges.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

To assess the effectiveness of films in raising climate change awareness among farmers in Gashua Local Government Area.

To examine the impact of climate change-themed films on farmers’ knowledge and perceptions of sustainable farming practices.

To evaluate the role of films in influencing farmers’ adoption of climate-resilient agricultural techniques in Gashua.

1.4 Research Questions

How effective are films in raising climate change awareness among farmers in Gashua Local Government Area?

What impact do climate change-themed films have on farmers’ understanding of sustainable farming practices?

To what extent do films influence farmers’ adoption of climate-resilient agricultural techniques in Gashua?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

Films significantly increase farmers’ awareness of climate change and its impacts on agriculture in Gashua Local Government Area.

Farmers who watch climate change-themed films are more likely to adopt sustainable farming practices than those who do not.

The content of climate change films is positively correlated with the adoption of climate-resilient farming techniques among farmers in Gashua.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it highlights the role of films as an innovative and effective tool for educating rural farmers about climate change. The findings will provide insights into how films can be used to increase awareness and encourage behavior change in farming communities. The research can contribute to climate change education programs by providing evidence of the potential impact of films on farmers’ knowledge and practices. Moreover, the study will inform filmmakers, policy makers, and NGOs on how to design and distribute films that effectively promote climate change awareness and sustainable agricultural practices in rural areas.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is focused on farmers in Gashua Local Government Area, Yobe State, and examines their engagement with climate change-related films. The research does not address other forms of media or climate change education methods. A limitation of the study is that the impact of films might vary depending on the specific content and the degree to which farmers actively engage with the films.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

Climate Change Awareness: Knowledge and understanding of the causes, effects, and mitigation strategies of climate change, particularly in relation to agriculture.

Sustainable Farming Practices: Agricultural practices that promote environmental sustainability, such as crop rotation, water conservation, and organic farming.

Climate-Resilient Agricultural Techniques: Farming practices designed to withstand the effects of climate change, such as drought-resistant crops, soil conservation, and water-efficient irrigation methods
